The Democracy Experiment Institute

ScholarshipandPractitioner Exchange

Field experience reshapes research questions; analytical rigour sharpens policy making.

Closing the gap between research and practice

Research and practice operate on separate tracks. Scholars publish work practitioners rarely read. Practitioners make decisions research rarely informs. Where the two meet, the encounter is brief, scripted, and confined to set agendas. Policy proceeds without evidence. Scholarship proceeds without grounding in practice.

TDE Institute convenes the two directly. Not panels. Not showcases. Sustained, reciprocal exchange on terms both sides set. Field experience reshapes the research questions. Analytical rigour sharpens the policy calls. The aim is not to avoid confrontation but to foster mutual transformation.

Forums of reciprocal exchange

01 — Quarterly Convening

Seasonal Dialogues

Not a retrospective seminar but a real-time response to what is happening now.

Each quarter, TDE Institute convenes a focused dialogue around a single subject of immediate salience. Partners, research associates, TDE fellows, and practitioners from relevant fields are brought together for a structured exchange designed to produce insight under pressure.

Knowledge produced at the speed the world demands.

The proceedings are published as a state-of-the-field update — available on the TDE Institute website and circulated as a working document to policymakers, academic networks, and institutional partners. Not a journal article written months after the fact, but a document intended to meet decision-makers in the moment they need it.

02 — Annual Gathering

TDE Annual Conference

Three days of living, working, and thinking together in a secluded location.

Once a year, TDE Institute gathers scholars and practitioners for a working conference. This is not a conventional academic event — there are no passive audiences, no parallel sessions, no panels delivered to half-empty rooms. By invitation only, the conference brings together experts from across disciplines and frontlines to assess the state of democracy: where the real dangers lie, where institutional responses are failing, and where the work should go next.

Communication, dialogue, and partnership that outlasts the conference itself.

The format is designed to build relationships that extend beyond the scope of the Institute. If you wish to recommend someone for invitation, please write to director@tde.institute.

03 — Accountability Forum

Partners Town Hall

A full accounting of the Institute's work — and a consultation on what should come next.

Once a year, TDE Institute opens its doors to all partners and associates for a full accounting of its work. The Board of Directors presents a year-long report — what was researched, what was published, what reached policymakers, and what impact the Institute's work had in practice.

If we ask the world's democracies to be accountable, we begin with ourselves.

But the Town Hall is not a presentation — it is a consultation. Partners are asked directly: what are the salient subjects the Institute should address in the coming year? Where are the gaps? Where should we push harder?

04 — Ad Hoc Exchange

Subject-Specific Consultations

Ad hoc calls specific to urgent or prominent subjects where we believe that policy makers could benefit from the expertise of academics, or when practitioners can inform academics of the most pressing subjects in the field.
